A Mission
.
The world is filled with books. Big books, little books, hardbacks, and paperbacks. Every year, thousands of books fly off the presses in a variety of editions, raining their type-filled pages on the world for all (or most) to read. Every day, humans are surrounded with the written word, in books, in newspapers, on the computer screen, and even on the bottom of the television screen.
Sometimes, surrounded so by written letters, it is easy to become confused. Should one read the latest novel, fresh of the press? Or is it about time to return to the older classics? It grows difficult.
This page, written by the "Bookworm," is an attempt to draw a few of the best books together, regardless of publication date or the tests of time. Some of the books on here have survived centuries of critics. Others have been written for only a short while... perhaps a year or two, perhaps a decade.
In selecting books, many criteria have been used to make the choice. There are many books available that are beautifully written, almost the epitome of good writing, but they may not be suitable for or agreeable to some people. Though I read these myself, and laud their authors, I have not listed them here, simply because I prefer to recommend those on a more individualized basis. For the most part, books on these pages attempt to steer clear of questionable content, so that younger readers might feel comfortable browsing pages suggested for their elders.
Then there are those books that uphold something beautiful, honorable, or virtuous but may not be examples of the world's best writing. I have included a few of these, as well... but only those which I feel are truly necessary to promote the a greater set of morals and ideals.
A medium ground has been set; stories about fairies, science fiction, and fantasy have not been removed. While some people are less inclined towards (or perhaps even opposed to)these subjects, Ihave included books containing them nonetheless, in hopes that the greater portion of my readers may enjoy them. Readers who disapprove of such matters mustbe advised to proceed with caution; while there are but few books of this sort, they are still there.
One last note: the author of this page professes a decidedly Christian worldview. While the books selected have not been limited to those containing this exact worldview, Christian standards have been applied to the books in question. Some are enthusiastically Christian, others nominally, and some not at all. Christian parents may therefore proceed with relative ease; others will hopefully not be bothered too much by the Christian perspective offered both on this site and in some of the books recommended.
It is my sincere hope that my suggestions and aids will prove a valuable resource and reference. Please enjoy.
