I picked up the book, read two chapters, and knew instantaneously that it was one of those books that would totally change my entire perspective on life (a.k.a. worldview). Dick Staub, a renowned talk radio host, discusses the way Christians are called to go into the world and love the world, without loving it too much or “falling for it.” Rather than telling all Christians to shun pop culture, Staub cites times in which he used pop culture to witness to the culture itself. By providing a perspective from which Christians can analyze and contemplate the world, he provides tools with which a Christian can strengthen his witness and his walk.
However, Staub also advises a degree of moderation, so that Christians may avoid the traps of the world. He has several examples of incidents where he refused an invitation or left an event early because remaining there would have been detrimental to his personal growth as well as the growth of his purpose.
While this book is well-written and a fascinating study, it is certainly not one to take in one lump sitting. It would probably be at its most effective if read at the rate of about one to two chapters a day, with time for digestion allowed in between. It is one of the best guides to serving today’s culture that I have read, and I strongly recommend it to anyone seeking a specific or trustworthy guide for applying the lessons of the Bible to everyday life.
